GHG Emissions: Our urban buildings are the major contributors of the Green house gases’ in the air we breathe today, about 40%. GHGs are nothing but gases that compose the pollutants thrown by our buildings. A GHG is the fundamental cause of green house effect today depleting the protective ozone layer of the atmosphere. At Naāndi we make sure we have almost zero GHG emissions from our infrastructure.
Urban traffic problem:City roads are choked by vehicles which drive less than 15% of its total population. Trying to solve the urban traffic problem by widening the roads is like trying to solve obesity by loosening the belt. Also private vehicles increase air pollution, while depleting the non-renewable sources through its fuel use. Mass transportation and an alternative greener way of transportation can only solve this crisis.
Naāndi encourages and provides for electric car charging points in its community and most of our communication systems are designed to be congestion free and eco friendly.
Black top surfaces:Black top surfaces cause environmental harm in multiple ways. These surfaces absorb more radiation than normal unpaved earth. This energy is dissipated in the form of heat energy causing urban heat island effect. Also, soil permeability in the overall region reduces to near zero preventing the natural replenishment of ground water. At the same time the quality of the organic content of the top soil most useful for farm production is lost forever. At Naāndi we take care of the earth and water cycle, the relationship between rain and earth, in a very conscious way helping water percolation into the earth, preventing soil erosion, hence soil pollution.
Population Density: As matters stand, in our crowded cities, there is not enough space to provide basic amenities such as water, electricity, shelter and a healthy environment. Their congestion is such that it is physically impossible for most cities to offer these basic amenities. In rural areas, there is no physical constraint but the absence of investment prevents people from enjoying basic amenities there too. We at Naāndi solve this situation of providing better amenities to the urban folk while addressing issues in rural environments.
Air conditioned spaces: The WHO estimates that up to 30% of new and remodeled buildings worldwide may be subject to excessive complaints related to indoor air quality due to air conditioning. Also, HVAC systems of buildings are responsible for 4.9% of total Green House Gas emissions. Same HVAC systems of buildings also use about 60-65% of the total energy. Summarizing, typically any conventional HVAC systems of buildings have the highest energy demands, increase health problems and while emitting GHGs that pollute the environment around. At Naāndi we solve this multi dimensional problem by providing a system that uses clean energy and provides the most natural air without any recirculation.
Urban Heat Island effect:An urban heat island (UHI) is a metropolitan area that is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas due to human activities. Heat island effect decreases air quality by increasing the production of pollutants such as ozone, and decreases water quality as warmer waters flow into streams and put stress on their ecosystems. We at Naāndi counter this with vegetation dominating most of our landscape.
Cell tower radiation:Cell phone signals and other net of electronic signals in urban centers today are a cause of major bio diversity disruption that we cannot yet fathom. Cell phone signals strongly disorient honey bees making them suffer from widespread miscommunication. It causes them to stop seeking out food and swarming. Similarly, the migratory birds lose their sense of direction with strong waves disrupting their biological signals. It is said that if a honey-bee builds its nest at a place it is the most healthy environment to live in, we at Naāndi prove that our environment thrives with such activity.
Pedestrian walkways:India registers the highest number of road fatalities in the world, safe walkways for pedestrians are rare here. Ailiments like diabetes and obesity can simply be prevented by regular walking, which is not possible in an accessible safe way in the urban centres. At Naāndi we promote walking and physical activity through ingenious design elements included in our overall design.
Cattle as life givers:At Naāndi, Cattle play a very important role. They not only they provide nourishment to us through dairy products but also enhance our farm produce in the most natural ways. The urine and dung from cattle is used to prepare organic farm manures and for bio gas generation, while the fodder is grown in our farm only making it an efficient closed-loop system.
True meaning of festivals:Festivals in our society are vernacular to the place and have aroused from a ‘farming culture’. Imagine if such celebrations are shared with the whole society not just your neighbours or your distant relatives. When different sections of the society celebrates them together restoring small traditions and which are a part of these celebrations they true meaning is restored. Naāndi aims for a culture as that, where a farmer shares his joy of harvesting, sowing and reaping with you over various festivals.
Perma-Agriculture:We at Naāndi follow the philosophy of Permanent agriculture, it is a philosophy of working with rather than against nature; of protracted & thoughtful observation rather than thoughtless labor; of looking at plants & animals in all their functions, rather than treating areas as single-product systems. We respect nature and truly believe that we cannot understand the mysteries of it completely and let it help our progress.
Culture of openness:Spaces do not thrive with the philosophy of ‘by invitation only’. A true public space addresses the human ways of being and follows the philosophy of openness. Traditionally our culture also does not promote a ‘gated living’, we invite people to share knowledge and joy. At Naāndi we believe that we can go fast alone, but we can go far together.
Organic Food store: Our food store would have all the inherent value of the agriculture produce for your consumption. The food store would also be provided with a detailed chart of what constitutes a healthy diet for you and your family. No more toxic food. No more of those fake hybrid stuff that you really hate but where you don’t really have a choice. Have a taste of the “real” deal.
Farm Houses:Our farm houses are designed with an open plan that integrates the exteriors with the interiors to promote 'living with the nature'.
Solar PV panels:Promoting self reliance in all our systems, we are 100% off grid in meeting our energy needs as well. We have designed smart solar systems connected in a micro-grid that borrow power from each other to meet the energy needs for our site. Being strongly backed by a design team we have designed these structures in an aesthetically pleasing way blending into our overall scheme.
Rain Water Harvesting:Water is a precious resource and we at Naāndi give it its due importance. From rain water harvesting to water sheds, our Water management has sustainability at the heart of its ideology. With a series of scientifically designed trenches, our watershed management techniques are designed to be fool proof.
